A Multi-State Components Approach in Life-Cycle Optimization

Authors

Jianjun Qin and Michael H. Faber

Abstract

The present paper proposes a probabilistic modeling of systems using a multi-state components approach and illustrates its application in the context of life-cycle optimization of engineered facilities. Both the variables related to the condition of the considered systems as well as the variables related to decisions on the life-cycle condition management are represented by vectors. The vector representation is then utilized for the purpose of life-cycle optimal inspection and maintenance planning for deteriorating system. Thereafter the suggested approach is applied in an example considering life-cycle optimization of inspection and maintenance strategies for concrete structures subject to spatially and temporarily random distributed corrosion deterioration.
