Abstract
Methods of structural reliability applied within the framework of Bayesian decision theory provide a strong and con-sistent basis for achieving cost optimal assessments of existing structures. This review gives an overview of the phi-losophy, theoretical concepts and tools which are essential to carry out a reliability based assessment of existing structures. Pointers are given to real applications of the methodology as well as to industry projects refining the methodology for special applications. Finally recommendations are given for future efforts.
