Abstract
Inspections for localized corrosion defects on steel structures are fundamentally different from other types ofinspections that are normally considered in reliability updating and inspection planning: For localized corro-sion defects, the actual measurement as well as the possibility of missing the largest defect must be accounted for in reliability updating following inspections. Taking basis in a typical engineering model of localized cor-rosion, which predicts the size of the largest defect in a specific area, the problem of reliability updating with the two events is formulated. On this basis, a simple equation is derived that allows the application of Struc-tural Reliability Analysis when calculating the updated reliability after the inspection. The approach is dem-onstrated on a numerical example considering CO2 corrosion in pipelines
