Reliability of rock fall protection galleries – A case study with a special focus on the uncertainty modeling

Abstract

Reliability analysis of rock-fall protection galleries is described and illustrated by an example. First it is demonstrated how the uncertainties in the estimation of the rock-fall frequency can be consistently included in the analysis. The resulting hazard model is then combined with a model describing the resistanceof the structure. To obtain the latter, a probabilistic model for punching shear failure in rock-fall galleries is proposed and analyzed by means of structural reliability analysis. The presented models may serve as a basis for determining consistent and optimal design loads for structures subject to rock-fall as well as other accidental loads.
